Remote Client Linux
Last updated on 8 October 2025
With the Remote Client, you can securely and easily connect to locations and devices via the Remote portal. This guide explains how to install, link, and use the remote client on Linux. The steps apply to Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch Linux.
Downloading and Selecting the Correct Package
Go to the Remote portal and log in with your account. In the portal, choose Manage clients and then Download. Select the correct package variant for your Linux distribution:
- .deb for Debian-based systems such as Ubuntu.
- .rpm for Red Hat-based systems such as Fedora.
- .pkg.tar.zst for Arch Linux-based systems.
Installation from the Terminal
Open a terminal and navigate to your download folder with:
cd ~/Downloads
Install the client using the command corresponding to your package:
- Debian/Ubuntu: sudo apt install ./remoteengineerclient_X.X.X-1_amd64.deb
- Fedora/Red Hat: sudo dnf install ./remoteengineerclient-X.X.X-1.x86_64.rpm
- Arch Linux: sudo pacman -U ./remoteengineerclient-X.X.X-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst
Confirm the installation when prompted by entering Y or J. The Remote Client will start automatically after installation. You can find the tray application in the application menu, and the client will now start automatically when your computer boots up.
Tray Application and Gnome
Note: If you are using a Linux distribution with the GNOME desktop environment (such as Debian or Fedora), you must manually enable support for tray applications. To do this, install the browser extension: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/615/appindicator-support/.
Linking the Client to your Portal Account
The linking process with your portal account varies by browser. With Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, the linking is automatic, and after successful linking, you will see a notification at the top of the portal with your device’s name. With Mozilla Firefox, open https://localhost:8443, click on Advanced, and then on Accept the Risk and Continue; after this, the notification will appear in the portal, and your client will be linked.
Do you not see the notification? Right-click the Remote icon in your system tray, choose Copy Key, and paste the key into the portal under Add Device.
Connecting to a Location
In the portal, go to Locations. Select a location: the Connect button will turn blue. Click Connect; once the status bar turns green, the connection is active.
Where to Find more Information
Consult the Remote Client Installation Guide for detailed instructions and troubleshooting. For portal-specific startup, you can also review the remote portal documentation.
