BACnet (Building Automation and Control Networks) is an open communication protocol specifically developed for building automation. It is applied worldwide for connecting and controlling installations such as:
- HVAC systems
- Lighting
- Access control
- Energy and water meters
- Shading and other building elements
BACnet is defined in the international standard ISO 16484-5 and offers a standardized way for devices and systems from different manufacturers to “communicate” with each other. Instead of each brand using its own closed protocol, BACnet creates a common language.
Key features of BACnet:
- Open standard – no licenses or vendor lock-in
- Interoperability – systems from different brands can work together
- Object-oriented – data is organized into objects (e.g., “Analog Input” for a temperature sensor)
- Network-independent – can run over IP (BACnet/IP), MSTP (serial), or even wirelessly
- Flexible and scalable – suitable for small buildings and large campuses
