Remote access to WAGO building controllers, BACnet and KNX
Last updated on 22 September 2026
Reaching a WAGO controller does not automatically expose every KNX or BACnet function. Start with the building architecture and identify the layer that the ServiceGate should make accessible.
Separate Ethernet from the fieldbus
WAGO describes BACnet controllers and interfaces to KNX and DALI. These are different parts of an installation. An Ethernet connection to a controller is not a direct connection to a KNX TP bus. Fieldbus access requires the appropriate interface, project configuration and software.
Keep building functions local
Lighting, ventilation and room control must continue when the external connection fails. Connect ServiceGate to the approved service network, not as a replacement for local automation. Establish whether the engineer needs a web interface, programming environment or an integrator-managed service computer.
Configure access by location
Create a location for the building or agreed technical section in the Remote Portal. Assign the router and authorised users or groups. Restrict firewall rules to required destinations and services. The routes needed follow the network design, not the number of brands installed.
Assess data points separately
Logging requires a list of available objects or registers. A BACnet object list, Modbus register list or controller-provided OPC UA interface may be the starting point if available on your model. Support for one protocol does not mean all WAGO devices expose the same data. A missing route may need a gateway or custom work.
Check the handover
- Confirm controller model, firmware and engineering software.
- Verify read permissions and the meaning of units and status values.
- Test continued local operation during WAN failure.
- Keep the project backup and network documents with the installation owner.
Where does this help?
An installer can narrow down whether a comfort complaint involves control logic, communication or a field component. Changes to groups, scenes or software still need project knowledge. ServiceGate provides the agreed access; it does not automatically translate every bus protocol or project file.
Access, data and ongoing management
All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring. Available data and services depend on equipment and configuration. Manage locations, users and groups through the Remote Portal. Segmentation and suitable firewall rules limit access but do not replace security updates for the router and installation.
