Read SMA inverter data with Modbus and ServiceGate

You want SMA inverter data alongside measurements from other installations. With a suitable local Modbus interface, a ServiceGate configuration can collect it. First check the model and its register profile.

Do not confuse SMA Modbus and SunSpec

SMA publishes information on SMA and SunSpec Modbus interfaces. Use the profile for your product and firmware. Do not copy addresses from another model because the measurement has the same name. Establish interface availability and activation for the actual installation.

Connect to the agreed technical network

ServiceGate reaches the approved inverter or gateway over the designed route. Keep service access and logging separate in the permissions plan. A maintenance user may need a different destination from the logger. Never expose the Modbus interface directly to the public internet.

Check every register’s meaning

Record addressing convention, data type, scaling and unit. Power in watts is not an energy counter in kilowatt-hours. Check import/export direction and representation of invalid or unavailable values. Start with a small approved read list.

Compare more than one operating state

A zero value at night does not prove that integration works. Compare available readings during production and standby against the local interface. Check counter behaviour after restart and time alignment with other meters. Account for source delay and sampling interval.

Make the boundary with energy control explicit

Monitoring is not permission to alter power limits, grid settings or battery behaviour. Control needs a separate design and approval by the responsible parties. A dashboard is not automatically a certified energy-management system or a billing meter.

What we need

  • Exact SMA model, firmware and local communication path.
  • Applicable register list and required measurements.
  • Read permissions, interval and retention requirements.
  • A contact for comparison with the local installation.

Access, data and ongoing management

All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring. Available data and services depend on equipment and configuration. Manage locations, users and groups through the Remote Portal. Segmentation and suitable firewall rules limit access but do not replace security updates for the router and installation.
