Read inverter data and monitor energy remotely

How do you bring output and status from distributed energy installations together? A ServiceGate can provide access to agreed equipment and collect available measurements. For SMA and Fronius inverters, Modbus/SunSpec is a relevant option to assess for the specific model.

What problem does this address?

Power and energy are different quantities. Power represents current load or production, while an energy counter accumulates over time. Comparing sites requires consistent measurement points, units, time zones and intervals. Also establish whether you measure production, consumption, grid import or export: an inverter does not automatically see the entire installation.

Brands, controllers and protocols

SMA: check Modbus and SunSpec for each inverter

SMA documents a Modbus interface for integrating suitable inverters. Use the relevant register list and check that the interface is enabled. Record the profile, unit ID and data types for the model. A generic Modbus connection becomes useful only when the registers are interpreted correctly.

Fronius: specify register models and scaling

Fronius documents Modbus TCP or RTU data export and SunSpec models. Check what the installed inverter or datamanager offers. Register addresses and value representations may differ between models. Select both the protocol and the correct register definition and firmware documentation.

Connecting the ServiceGate

Connect suitable Ethernet equipment to the agreed network behind the ServiceGate. A serial RTU connection needs an appropriate interface or gateway; an Ethernet cable does not turn RS485 into Modbus TCP. Start read-only with power, energy count and status. Compare values with the local display and handle missing or invalid readings. Only then configure dashboards and alerts.

From a connection to useful insight

Example setup: a dashboard shows an unexpected drop in production, and an authorised technician remotely checks the available diagnostics. This supports investigation but does not automatically prove a fault. Writing power, battery or export settings is a separate control function with its own permissions and risks. Monitoring does not authorise such changes.

Remote access and data logging, with clear boundaries

All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring. The actual integration depends on model, firmware, interface and configuration. With VPN, your computer connects to the authorised location; configured VNC, RDP, HTTP or HTTPS services provide another access route through the portal. For logging, configure the protocol, data points and destination. The router receives that configuration and forwards data to the relevant service. Then configure dashboards, alarms and events. A named brand is a technical example, not a statement of certification, partnership or support for every model.

Permissions and traceable connections

Assign routers to locations and grant users or groups only the permissions they need. The portal shows who connected to which location. This records connections, not automatically every action inside the machine. For audit purposes, also define retention periods and any additional log sources. Agree a firewall profile for each customer or location, such as deny by default with explicit exceptions. Segmentation does not replace controller and machine security updates.

What do we need to assess your integration?

  • Brand, exact model, firmware and installed software licences.
  • Network diagram, IP addresses, interfaces and the owner’s approval.
  • Required service tasks and the people who may access the installation.
  • Measurements with register or object lists, units and collection intervals.
  • Requirements for alarms, retention and any on-site logging during connection loss.
