Remote service on board: access without steering control

A specialist ashore can help investigate a yacht-system fault through limited service access. This requires onboard permission and excludes access to course or speed operation.

Define the boundary before designing the network

This application concerns technical installations, not remotely navigating the vessel. Exclude course, speed, autopilot and direct propulsion commands from the access route. An integrated screen may expose several functions; hiding a menu item is not adequate separation.

Coordinate with the vessel integrator

Ask the responsible vessel integrator for network diagrams, approved interfaces and the service procedure for the yacht concerned. Fit ServiceGate into the existing maintenance environment, user roles and safety boundaries. Additional service access does not automatically replace the existing solution or onboard agreements.

Create a segment for the agreed installation

Place ServiceGate in a suitable technical segment and define the service needed at each destination. Configure firewall policy per yacht or location: deny by default and allow assessed exceptions. Check return routes and shared workstations so an indirect path cannot reach excluded systems.

Authorise viewing and changes separately

Use individual portal users assigned to the right yacht or technical section. An HTTPS, VNC or RDP service can expose an approved maintenance environment; engineering over VPN requires suitable local software. Use restricted accounts. Every installation change needs agreed permission, a safe condition and a recovery option.

Record the session appropriately

The Remote Portal can show who connected to which location. This is not a complete record of every action. For auditable maintenance, agree ticket number, time window, onboard responsible person, system logs and retention. Provide an agreed procedure for the crew to have access terminated.

Acceptance before use

  • Demonstrate that course and speed operation cannot be reached through this route.
  • Test only in an approved, safe maintenance situation.
  • Check restricted accounts, revoked permissions and session termination.
  • Confirm local operation and protection continue without external connectivity.

Access, data and ongoing management

All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring. Available data and services depend on equipment and configuration. Manage locations, users and groups through the Remote Portal. Segmentation and suitable firewall rules limit access but do not replace security updates for the router and installation.
