Onboard data logging with intermittent internet

Yachts change connections and may go offline. Design monitoring around required retention, bandwidth and controlled recovery. Do not promise continuous reachability where it cannot be guaranteed.

Choose the data needed ashore

Approved energy data, operating hours and alarm history may help maintenance. Victron GX is an example of a family with documented Modbus TCP data; its presence and suitability on a yacht need confirmation. Other systems need their own integrator-approved interface.

Separate recording from internet availability

All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring, but local storage and recovery behaviour must suit the configuration. Establish whether the router, a controller or an additional logger buffers data. Specify retention capacity and full-storage behaviour.

Preserve measurement time and quality

Use original measurement time, identifiable source and quality status. Distinguish live, delayed and missing data. Define duplicate and backlog handling after reconnection. An old alarm arriving late is not automatically a new incident.

Service traffic has different requirements

A low-frequency data stream may remain practical when interactive RDP or VNC is not. Agree bandwidth, data use and priorities with the network manager. ServiceGate does not replace satellite or mobile internet service or guarantee connectivity everywhere the yacht sails.

Course and speed remain excluded

This logging and service route is not for navigating the vessel. No direct course, speed, autopilot or propulsion-command operation. Test data-configuration changes only in an approved maintenance situation; even a data connection can unintentionally load systems.

Test a realistic interruption

  • Agree the test duration and data volume.
  • Check local recording and independent installation operation.
  • Compare timestamps, counts and gaps after recovery.
  • Check notifications, connection logs and documented retention.

Access, data and ongoing management

All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring. Available data and services depend on equipment and configuration. Manage locations, users and groups through the Remote Portal. Segmentation and suitable firewall rules limit access but do not replace security updates for the router and installation.
