Pumping-station data logging during connection loss
Last updated on 22 September 2026
Internet failure must not look like a normally operating pumping station. Design both the data stream and the way missing data and recovery are handled.
Keep three responsibilities separate
Local process control, local alarming and external reporting have different roles. ServiceGate remote access and logging do not replace pump control or required local alarms. Record which functions must survive WAN loss and who tests them.
Choose the source for each installation
A Grundfos interface or Flygt APP controller may offer a model-specific Modbus route; a PLCnext project may offer OPC UA. Do not select on brand alone: record the interface, point list and owner. Preserve existing telemetry unless a change is explicitly designed and approved.
Treat local buffering as a design requirement
If data must survive an outage, confirm whether the router, controller or additional logger provides the buffer. Specify capacity, write rate, maximum interruption and full-storage behaviour. Do not promise unlimited buffering or lossless automatic recovery without testing these properties.
Recover without misleading or duplicate data
Retain original measurement time alongside reception time. Define duplicate detection and backlog handling. The dashboard should show gaps or quality warnings for missing data. Filling a gap with zero could falsely suggest a stopped pump.
Run a specific outage test
- Interrupt the WAN in an agreed test, not the process controller.
- Check local operation, storage and how the operator is contacted.
- Restore connectivity and compare counts and timestamps.
- Distinguish delayed event notifications from new alarms.
Document the operating arrangements
Record retention, time synchronisation, logger monitoring and recovery. An audit also needs user and connection information: a measurement series is not a service-action log. Share the outage scenario with our team to assess standard configuration or custom work.
Access, data and ongoing management
All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring. Available data and services depend on equipment and configuration. Manage locations, users and groups through the Remote Portal. Segmentation and suitable firewall rules limit access but do not replace security updates for the router and installation.
