Read machine data with OPC UA and a ServiceGate

You want more than connectivity: you want to know what is happening. OPC UA can provide a data interface. With a suitable ServiceGate configuration, you collect agreed values for trends, dashboards and notifications. Start with the question you need to answer, not the largest possible tag list.

Which machine data do you want to collect and monitor?

Choose a specific question, such as when a machine stops and which status preceded the stoppage. Create a short measurement list with each value's meaning, unit, expected range, required interval and definition owner. A counter without documented reset behaviour can produce a misleading dashboard.

This guide covers the approach for machine building and management. The separate OPC UA protocol manual in the knowledge base remains the technical reference for available configuration fields.

Check the machine's OPC UA server

Suitable Siemens and Beckhoff product variants can offer OPC UA with the required software setup. Check the exact model, firmware, server licence and exposed variables. Not every PLC from these manufacturers has a usable OPC UA server as standard.

Record the endpoint: the address where the server offers the connection. Also record variable identifiers, data types and account permissions. Use read-only permissions for a monitoring account wherever possible. ServiceGate support and the selected driver must match the server functions being used.

Assess certificates and user permissions separately

OPC UA uses application certificates and communication security settings. These are different from the permissions allowing a user or account to read variables. Check certificate trust on both sides and choose a supported secure endpoint configuration.

Do not automatically accept every unknown certificate. Verify server identity and document certificate renewal. For connection errors, examine trust, validity, the system clock, endpoint address and account permissions. A VPN is not a reason to disable OPC UA security without assessment.

PLC data to a dashboard: configure data logging centrally

In the Remote Portal, select the appropriate protocol configuration and specify which data to retrieve or receive. The configuration is sent to the router, which forwards the data to the intended service. Build dashboards, alarms and events there.

All ServiceGate routers support remote access and data logging/monitoring; the exact integration depends on the equipment and configuration. Match the reading or publishing interval to your question and the controller's workload. Available methods and limits are established for the specific driver setup.

Set up data logging through the portal, not through the router’s local interface. If you want to use the same measurement setup on several machines, templates help reuse settings. Check the variables, units, permissions and server settings on each machine. Then configure alarms and events: a fault alert is only useful when the measurement, threshold and recipient fit the application.

A measurement is more than a number

OPC UA can provide status information and timestamps alongside a value. Check which of these the complete chain preserves and uses. An old value must not silently appear as a current measurement. Define how dashboards represent missing, invalid or delayed data.

Test what happens when internet connectivity fails and returns. Do not assume local buffering, retention periods or later replay: document what the selected solution supports. A broken data stream is not proof that a machine has stopped.

Commission a small, verifiable dataset

  • Compare selected measurements with values shown locally by the controller.
  • Check units, scaling, time zones and counter resets.
  • Test an invalid value and an interrupted connection.
  • Check alarm delays, recipients and recovery messages using agreed test notifications.
  • Record the variable list, certificate management, access permissions and configuration version.

What does this give you?

A verified data chain provides a useful foundation for fault analysis and maintenance. Predictive maintenance or AI may follow when sufficient reliable historical data and clear fault definitions are available. Enabling OPC UA alone does not deliver predictive maintenance.

Secure access also needs ongoing management

A separate machine segment and appropriate permissions restrict reachability. They do not replace security updates for the router, controller and machine software. Agree firewall rules, permitted actions and local safety procedures with the owner.

Sources and scope

Based on the technical documentation below, consulted on 22 September 2026, and the described Remote Engineer functionality. Manufacturer documentation supports protocol behaviour and requirements, not certification of the ServiceGate integration. Examples are illustrative; confirm model compatibility and settings for your installation.
