sTunnel

Last updated on 16 October 2025

VPN via sTunnel wraps VPN traffic in an HTTPS connection so it appears as regular web traffic. With this method, you can create a secure VPN without opening additional ports, since HTTPS is typically allowed in strictly secured networks.

What is sTunnel and when to Use It

sTunnel is an option alongside TCP and UDP that allows Remote VPN connections to run over HTTPS. Because the traffic appears as standard web traffic, firewall adjustments are often unnecessary. Even in environments where TCP or UDP are not available, a connection can be established via sTunnel.

Advantages and Limitations

Key advantages are that you don’t need to open additional ports and that sTunnel works in environments with strict network restrictions. The transport runs over HTTPS, which reduces the chance of firewall blocking. Note that performance and latency may differ compared to direct TCP or UDP connections.

How it Relates to TCP and UDP

TCP and UDP remain standard options for VPN connections. sTunnel provides an alternative route when TCP or UDP are blocked. Use sTunnel primarily as a fallback in networks where only web traffic is permitted.

Security

Because sTunnel transports VPN traffic over HTTPS, you maintain end-to-end encryption of the VPN session. HTTPS ensures that traffic is less likely to be filtered or blocked, but always pay attention to certificate management and the general security policy in your environment.

Setting up for a Client

Do you want a client to connect via sTunnel? Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the portal.
  2. Go to Manage Clients and open the settings of the relevant client via Edit.
  3. Select the option Connect via sTunnel and confirm your choice.

After this setting, the client will be connected via sTunnel by default.

Practical Applicability

This option is particularly valuable for external customers or suppliers where firewall changes are not possible. With sTunnel, you can achieve remote access without compromising security.

Who is Responsible

Ensure that the network administrator and the person responsible for the location are aware of the choice for sTunnel and any implications for monitoring and logging. If you have questions about the product or setup, you can contact Remote.
