The challenge

Schiphol has specific requirements when it comes to sewer drainage. Thus, this disposal of the piers and all other locations at Schiphol should be perfectly regulated. For example, to pump passenger feces at the airport, sewage pumping stations are used.

D-icing installations are also deployed at various aircraft stands to spray antifreeze on the aircraft during the winter period. This antifreeze is collected in special pumping wells that ensure that this antifreeze mixture does not end up directly in surface water. And pumps are also used to drain excess water on the runways.

Schiphol’s hard requirement is that there should always be immediate intervention if a pump malfunctions and also that the pump’s control system should be smart enough to allow predictive action. For example, based on flight information, pumping out pumping stations in time to get ahead of problems.

Solution

This project with an extensive requirements package was awarded through a tender to our relationship REMONDIS Smart Infra. They received this order from Schiphol because they worked with Remote to develop a product that does exactly what is needed and is also many times cheaper than completely replacing all the hardware in the pumping stations.

Realization

Together with REMONDIS, we developed the so-called Smart Controller and wrote software for it. This “smart controller” ensures that all of Schiphol’s objects can be remotely accessed and data from the pumping stations can be sent to the Azure Cloud environment for predictive action when the weather turns. For this project, in addition to the Smart Controller, our

applied.

By developing and manufacturing the Smart Controller, REMONDIS stayed well ahead of the competition by offering a much cheaper and more durable solution. Existing hardware did not need to be replaced and client Schiphol’s wish was optimally fulfilled.
